Range

Arctic Ocean through Pacific Ocean to Tasman Sea and Australian Bight;
Breeds on is. from the Nuyt's Archipelago, South Australia through the Bass Strait (King and Furneaux Is.) off Victoria (Wilson's Promontory, Seal and Phillip Is.) and around Tasmania (Bruny Island), n. to Baremans Bay on Broughton Is. off s. New South Wales and in the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia.
Disperses to Queensland, New Zealand (North Island and South Island) and s. to Antarctica (65S). Migrates n. past the Pacific coasts of Japan, Siberia (Kamchatka, Kuril Is.) to winter off the Aleutian Is. and in the Bering Sea through the Bering Strait into the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea n. to 71N. Returns s. from the n. Alaska coast to the Aleutians and the Pacific coasts of Canada, the United States to n. Mexico (Baja) and then s. through the c. Pacific where it has been recorded from the Tuamotu Archipelago, Samoa, Fiji, Kiribati, Marianas, Marshall, Caroline and Hawaiian Is. Some birds have been reported from the n. Indian Ocean off Pakistan, Sri Lanka and s. Thailand.
