Range

Andes of w. South America;
Three populations;
(1) Ex. nw. Venezuela (n. Merida to sw. Tachira), Colombia (Santa Marta Mountains, Andes, Parques Nacionales Purace, Rio Bedon, Rio Pichinde) to n. Ecuador (Chimborazo, Rio Pastaza). A gap in the range apparently occurs between (1) and (2).
(2) C. Ecuador (Mindo-Nambillo Forest) to c. Peru (Molinopampa in Amazonas to Rio Canete and Rio Chanchay, Lima). Transition forms between (2) and (3) occur from Junin to Cuzco, Peru.
(3) S. Peru (Cuzcan to Lake Titicaca w. to Arequipa, Rio Vitor) to e. Peru (Limbani in Puno on the Bolivian border) and ex. n. Chile (Arica). Transition forms between (3) and (4) occur to the e.
(4) W. and c. Bolivia (La Paz to Tarija). Transition forms between (4) and (5) to the s.
(5) Bolivia (Tarija), n. Chile and nw. Argentina (s. to Catamarca and La Rioja). A second gap in the range apparently occurs between (5) and (6).
(6) N. Chile (s. from Rio Huasco (27S) in Atacama, Lauca National Park) and Argentina (s. from Mendoza) to Tierra del Fuego (mountains of Beagle Channel). An isolated population occurs on the Nahuelbuta Massif, wc. Chile. Formerly on Isla Grande, Tierra del Fuego.
