E. and s. Indonesia to New Guinea, Australia, Tasmania and n. New Zealand;
Malay Archipelago on Java (in the w. at Pulau Rambut and Pulau Dua), Bali, Borneo (at least formerly), Sulawesi, and the Moluccas, New Guinea, D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago (Fergusson Is.) and Aru Is., Australia (sw. and n. Western Australia, n. Northern Territory, e. Queensland, New South Wales in the Murray-Darling Basin, Victoria, e. South Australia), New Caledonia (swamp near Noumea Race Course), Norfolk Is., New Zealand (North Island, Waikare, Bay of Plenty, Rangaunu Bay).
Disperses to Tasmania and some birds may move between Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.
